Caribbean Red

I'm very proud of this photo. Not just because it's so beautiful, but because I managed to take it - under such pressure, too; the flowers are so light, and the wind kept taking them. However, as you can see, I did it.

I'd like to show you some of my photos that capture the Caribbean red. It's a colour that transfixed me time and time again. Whatever you might think about synesthesia, I think that Caribbean red jingles and rings. It has the ability to linger in the Caribbean air.

Here's a quotation from Colour: Messages and Meanings by Leatrice Eiseman:
"Red is the most physical color in the spectrum. It is the most viscerally alive hue,the symbolic color of the heart,strong-willed and expressing strong emotions. It may command us to stop but at the same time encourages movement. Physiologically, red is a call to the adrenaline glands to get the body and senses activated.
Word association studies invariably show red is perceived as most sensual of all colors and, as the saying goes, 'sex sells'. "

  1. Hello Olga:
These pictures are superb - so vibrant, so redolent of place and, we feel, so very personal because, as we understand it, you selected them as subjects which had, and continue to have, an appeal to you.

But none of that properly describes the first image which has an intensity and depth almost unmatched. It is, Olga, outstanding. We do so hope that you will frame it.

  2. Such a beautiful vibrant red, but with a touch of depth that means it's not at all brash, and so striking against the blue. You have me looking around here wishing I had some of it. Your flower photo is wonderful.

  4. Yep, you're right about that red. Not just the Caribbean, but throughout all Latino tropical cultures, it seems most of the colors are PRIMARY -- intense and vibrant, best expressed in the warm direct sun.

Red is best, no question about it -- and it goes with the food, the music, the people. So sensuous. So alive.

    Great pics.

    :-))))

Think you might like a quote from my book 'Violet Jelly'. Vera the fly is looking for something to make her beautiful and discovers a jar of 'red':

'Vera is out of the bag and the ointment. She is looking at a bottle full of red.
    "Are you ointment?" she asks.
    "No. Food colouring," it answers.
"Oh. Will it make me beautiful?" Vera hopes it will.
"No. Just red," answers the bottle.'
