I have recently discovered that celebrating Valentine’s Day isn’t cool anymore. I think that most people are repelled by the immoderate commercialization of this holiday. For example, my husband was buying me flowers a week ago, and he was told at the flower shop that it’s a good thing he’s buying them now, because, right before the holiday, all flowers would cost 15% more. As if it would be possible to buy Valentine’s Day flowers in advance.

I have an idea – I think Valentine’s Day should be made illegal. Then it would be so much fun to celebrate it. Instead of meeting at a restaurant that is very conspicuously filled with couples, people would meet their dates in romantically secret places. The whole process of the date would be cloaked in adventure and mystery. The bittersweet taste of danger would only amplify the feelings that people have for each other.

Of course, there would have to be a special Valentine’s Day police unit. Anyone who would get caught kissing or even gazing at each other longingly would have to be fined.

Meanwhile, since it’s still possible to celebrate Valentine’s Day without any potential legal repercussions, I would like to wish you a happy one!

The new law could be advertised by this catchy jingle.

  1. 15%? Flowers go up by at least 200% here around Valentine's day! That's why Mrs. Map NEVER gets flowers on VD! I buy flowers on the most random accassions, but never when I'm 'supposed' to, so they are always a surprise, and always most welcome. :¬)

  3. Phenomenal post! I melted into the intitial photograph; as to the rest - I subscribe to all of that ... away with the commercialism ... celebrate romantically, in secret.

    Thank you for your wishes!

  4. Olga we just do not celebrate valentine's day at all any more. It has quite simply become far too commercial and expensive. Diane

  11. I completely agree! I work at a grocery store so I noticed how a dozen roses went from costing $9.99 one week to $18.99 a few days before Valentine's Day! I’m happy with just a card and box of chocolates.

& thank you very much for your comment :)

  12. We do nothing particular for Valentine's either. I don't like being expected to do something because a bunch of shops and restaurants want to make some easy money. Do I look like a mug?

    But happy Valentine's anyway. :)

  13. you're absolutely right. Valentine's Day is getting so commercialized and overrated these days. my DH prefers to surprise me at other times where it is more meaningful. we are old romantics. :)

  14. lol Olga – I could not agree with you more. I’m happily married to a kind, uplifting husband but you could not pay me enough to go out with him tonight. We enjoy spending a great deal of money on our anniversary so Valentine’s Day is just not for us. :)

  15. Hi Olga, very good! I like the secret assignations idea! How fun! I'm single at the moment, and I wish my Admirer would have sent me a Valentine's card! I guess for us singles Valentine's Day still has a hint of anticipation and hope. I sent the man I secretly like a Valentine with a little poem in it, but did not sign it wanting to keep it a mystery :-)

  17. Hi mapstew,
I understand that they're just doing business, but somehow it comes across as a little sketchy.

    Hi Wong,
Thank you for the compliment. Lately, this is my favourite colour combination.

    Hi aguja,
It seems that, in some cultures, this is already happening - strange as this may sound! For example, I found out about a district in Russia where the governor outlawed giving flowers and valentines.

    Hi Diane,
Essentially, this is such a good holiday. It's too bad that it's been commercialized this way.

    Hi Lindy,
I agree with this philosophy - love for every day, not just on a holiday.

  18. Hi Eko,
I hope you also had a happy Valentine's Day. It's wonderful when this spirit is always with us.

    Hi Lena,
I feel you have something personal against Valentine's Day :) I'm glad you at least enjoyed the photo.

    Hi Fernando Santos,
I agree that love should be in our hearts every day :)

    Hi Carol,
How lucky that I could find such appropriate videos for my post. I hope you had a great VD!

    Hi Brenda,
That's more than 15%...more like 50. Hopefully, chocolates will never let us down :)

  19. Hi Sarah,
You shouldn't do what you don't feel like, and if they find you grumpy, let them :)

    Hi Life Ramblings,
I think that old romantics will always find ways to entertain themselves without the help of greasy businesspeople.

    Hi Charlene,
I think it's wonderful when couples find a way to agree on celebrating and giving gifts on their own terms. Thank Goodness my husband and I are also in agreement on this subject.

    Hi Dolly,
You are a real romantic! It's not a matter of gifts, but a matter of really knowing that somebody likes you.

    Hi Style, She Wrote,
I really love these colours right now. Thank you for the compliment.

  20. What a wonderful idea. Making Valentine's Day illegal would certainly add spice to the occasion!
